The Department of Anesthesiology celebrated its twenty graduating residents on Friday, June 7 at Guastavino's, a Manhattan landmark located under the 59th Street Bridge.
Department Chair Dr. Hugh Hemmings welcomed the graduates and their guests.
"We take immense pride in your achievements and we're very proud that you'll be joining the ranks of alumni of Weill Cornell Medicine," he said. With a nod to the evenings festivities, he advised the graduates to never stop learning and asking questions, but also keep a sense of humor.
In the words of Winston Churchill: "You cannot deal with the most serious things in the world unless you also understand the most amusing."
Executive Vice Chair for Education Dr. Kane Pryor remarked on what a privilege it was to teach the residents. "When the people we train are as talented, spirited, and interesting as the twenty of you, it inspires us and it validates us," he said, before introducing the evening's timely theme: "Welcome to the Weill Cornell Anesthesiology 2024 AI Graduation, brought to you by ChatGPT."
Dr. Eric Brumberger, the residency program director, gave special thanks to the graduating chief residents — Drs. Chrissy Cherenfant, Jacob Lurie and Mike Yamakawa — and to Drs. Latha Panchap and Christina Zecca who led the Residency Support Council. "I hope each and every member of the graduating class recognizes how much this faculty, and our surrounding support team values and loves you," he told the grads.
The evening continued with tributes to each of the graduates that was composed by ChatGPT and delivered by members of the faculty.
